“Chordata Nihil” Arif Çekderi's Sculpture Collection
A Solo Sculpture Exhibition
“Chordata Nihil” Arif Çekderi
Curator Mahmut Nüvit Doksatlı
“Chordata Nihil” takes its name from the words Chordata, meaning “vertebrates,” and Nihil, meaning “nothingness.” The exhibition explores the fragile relationship between humanity’s evolutionary past and the contemporary sense of emptiness.
Spines, thorns, and prosthetic forms made of steel become points of resistance, not only of the body, but also of existence. These structures visualize the body’s relationship to the void, serving as symbols of both protection and erasure.
The coldness of metal with its materiality born from stellar explosions reaching the earth becomes a response to the indifference of both nature and the universe.
The exhibition invites the viewer to think in the face of both inner and cosmic “nothingness,” and to confront the limits of the body and the material world.
